inspiration photo

Recently I've been finding this picture of Yves Saint Laurent, with one of his muses, Betty Catroux (left), so inspiring. On the right is Loulou de la Falais. The safari-style dress, loose belt and big sunglasses are so retro, and yet so modern. Love it.

late summer style

Late summer style...
The perfect time for white blouses, cat-like eyes, the beginning of layering,
and bright colors, because we're not quite ready to stop having fun...

Everyone has many facets to their personal style and taste... and these two photos (from Garance Dore) perfectly encapsulate one facet of mine. I guess it might seem sort of unexpected, since I just posted about Kate Spade, a totally different aesthetic and mindset.
But I love the mix of black and cream colors visually. And I love a black skull t-shirt in a closet next to Chanel. How it's all pristine but not OCD-organized. And a little black feather fascinator -- so British, so fun, so elegant and whimsical at the same time.

kate spade ads

What I love about Kate Spade ads I think is how they aren't deliberately about the product, at first glance you aren't even really sure what it is. It's really just selling a lifestyle, quirky personality, cute attention to detail and color, with a heavy dose of nostalgia.

carefree & full of whimsy

I love this image, from German Vogue, of a Louis Vuitton look -- bunny ears included. I love seeing such a sort of ridiculous accessory put into a youthful, fun, and ultimately actually wearable look.

lara stone & morgan freeman in vogue

An unlikely pair, but gorgeous photographs in Vogue (US) several months ago. Lara Stone has so many completely different outfits in this editorial, but she makes them all work, effortlessly. I especially love the D&G tweed skirt-suit, below, and the canary yellow sundress with motorcycle boots.
This must have been a sincerely fun one to shoot.

sofia coppola for LV, and 3 dresses I truly love.

I love the loose black bow in the back of this dress! It's so carefree but also sophisticated.

Some of the images from Sofia's new ad campaign with Louis Vuitton handbags:

Behind the scenes of the Miss Dior Cherie ad! I LOVE the construction of the light pink dress:

But, truly, THIS is why god created dresses:

Tres jolie!
Ok, I've gotten carried away! ;)

black book magazine always delivers.

As usual, gorgeous editorial from BB. I love these images for this time of year, they remind me of an aristocratic girl having to layer on all her fancy clothes to stay warm in a big old mansion somewhere... and I love the eclectic styling of the clothes themselves.

amber valletta for loewe

I wish all fashion ads were as dynamic, interesting .... and ultimately beautiful as these. You just want to keep on looking at them, I find.

vanity fair's best photos of the year

Vanity Fair has on their site now "The Year in Pictures," featuring many of their favorites from all 12 issues. My two favorites were these, of Angelina Jolie and Selma Blair.

Happy 2009, everyone!

the next generation: elettra wiedemann

Elettra Wiedemann (daughter of Isabella Rosellini) made Vogue's 10 Best Dressed list this week for this dress (above) by Roberto Cavalli. I've been noticing her red carpet looks a lot recently, as they tend to be more daring, and with a more intrinsic sense of style than most model's outfits. She's one of my favorite relatively new models, who based on her mother's example I think will have a long career. I did read that she's going to London this fall to study something incredibly impressive like biomedical engineering though. I guess she's not your typical model in a lot of ways...

Elettra was also featured in a large spread in Elle Italia in August 2008, which I love for the naturalness of the pictures and colors, it makes all the looks very accessible:
