more resort 2009

To me the best resort collections this season were all about mixing bright colors and different patterns, and maintaining the balance between structure and lightness appropriate for the resort season. Nobody does patterns quite like Missoni, who are probably best known for their zig-zag stripey knits, and they mixed this with florals and textured fabrics in outfits and even within single dresses, without it being too over-the-top.

Missoni:

Derek Lam:

Derek Lam had a definite retro vibe in some of his prints, but a definite modernity in the cuts of his outfits, all in vibrant colors and complex fabrics.

Roberto Cavalli:

Not a big fan of Cavalli's animal prints, but by keeping them in black and white here and using a light, translucent chiffon fabric with ruffles and pleats, they would be perfect for a vacation.

Balenciaga:

A lot of Balenciaga's resort looks were just spin-offs of their strong fall looks, but some managed to stand out because of light use of color that almost resembles Narciso Rodrigues or Calvin Klein, and much lighter fabrics, like in this perforated, airy white dress, that changed up the basic familiar structure.

Marchesa:
A very classic cut for this mini-dress managed to make light brocade fabric casual enough for everyday, or resort.
