So I've been terribly remiss in posting recently, but I simply couldn't miss this! I'm a total sap, it's one of my absolute favorite nights of the year, even if this time I had to watch alone, lying in bed at 2am, falling asleep. Ah well.

My hands-down favorite of the evening was Cameron Diaz, I thought she looked like perfect Hollywood glamour: wavy hair, sparkle, red lips, smile. No ribs popping out of her chest! To me, seeing her in the dress reminded me of why we girls like getting dressed up in the first place. Gown is by Oscar de la Renta, jewels by Cartier.

I thought Meryl looked fantastic, on a big night even though she didn't win, as it marked her being the most-nominated actress ever. I thought she looked statuesque and gorgeous and happy in this white dress, and I was very pleased to read that it was by Chris March from Project Runway; a designer that I always liked work- and personality-wise, and it's nice to see that they do get good work after the show is over!

Sandra Bullock was the big win of the evening (isn't Best Actress the award people really care about, or at least remember afterwards??) and she seemed to have a sense of this beforehand, as Julia Roberts did years back with that vintage Valentino -- because she looks classic and beautiful in sparkling Marchesa. A little safe perhaps, but you never want to go into the history books in a "miss".

I always think Penelope chooses well, the gowns always suit her body and give enough drama without being too risky; I always enjoy what she wears. And I was again pleased with Carey Mulligan; she's become quite an aficionada of Prada but I love the mix of textures on the thick fabric and quirky little appliques, so I think it was just original enough.

A lovely night for Tom Ford -- I saw his film and absolutely loved it, and from his interviews on the red carpet you could tell just how proud and enthusiastic he was, which is a sincerity I really appreciate in Hollywood! I thought Robert Downey Jr was one of the best-dressed men, even if (or because??) he looks a bit goofy here, and with his sneakers and bow tie. He was having fun with it, which should be the point afterall, without making fun of the whole thing. And doesn't his wife look fantastic?? Much better dressed than a lot of the actresses in my opinion!

I liked Tina Fey's dress if not her hair-do, it's Michael Kors and though she's almost always in black or navy she's getting a little more adventurous with her outfits which is nice to see. I love Miley's dress, but was unsure of whether to post it because I think she's a little too young to really do it justice. But whoever her stylist is, well done!

The only real style icon I've been thinking about lately is Brigitte Bardot. She's known of course as the quintessential sex kitten, but she also pulled off a great mod style, simple wearable outfits tied together perfectly, modest even despite her incredible looks.

It's a style I see in the shop girls of the fancy designer shops here in Milan -- the slightly bookish, oversize glasses, a crisp white shirt with the collar just so, something I can't quite put my finger on. A sort of modern androgyny, part mod and part almost schoolgirl.... Well I'll let you know if I master it.

I'm really loving the white tweed looks from the Chanel SS'10 show.... Something about them feels very demure, innocent almost, somehow, but with a sophistication in the Marie Antoinette references. They're looks for spring, but I feel they could be a very nice look for this winter; a crisp white tweed or boucle jacket over a party dress or with nice trousers...

It was a highly anticipated show -- Phoebe Philo's return (well, after a smaller debut resort collection of basics). And to me these clothes are perfect simplicity. Leather t-shirts, shrugs, and skirts; trench coat meets shirt dresses; crisp white blouses and billowing khaki pants and jackets. The select use of stronger color is exquisite as well -- teals and dark blues that complement the neutrals perfectly.

Expectations were high, but Phoebe Philo didn't disappoint.

I always love a graphic pattern -- particularly a strong one using black. I have to be careful when shopping because that's what I'm always drawn to, and you don't want your entire closet to be filled with stripes! But it came as no surprise to me that these were my favorite looks from the Viktor and Rolf spring show. I love how they took the lines of a tuxedo lapel and made them abstract forms on dresses and drapey jackets.

I saw some of the bracelets from Giles and Brother in a magazine today and was transfixed: I love how they blend utilitarian and historical objects -- railway spikes, horseshoes, nuts and bolts -- with other equestrian details like hoofs and tied leather. Detail I am loving now: tiny feather embellishment. I love how these looks (DVF, Fall 2009 and Burberry Fall 2008) use feathers as a textural detail and color pattern, not as fluff like you see in red carpet gowns. So luxe and chic.

There are many many many style guide books out there, especially that have come out in the past few years. I like these two because, while the tip every style guide ever gives you is "be yourself", these books actually show you how to do just that. No matter how "yourself" you're being, just about everyone needs to have a look they're channeling, an idea, a mood, an ideal version of how they see themselves. The Lucky Guide helps you find that by showing 10 classic "looks" -- gamine, boho, bombshell, and everything in between -- how to achieve them, and then how to mix and match so you don't look cliche. The Mizrahi guide has an elaborate system of finding your own style that he goes through, from creating a look board to going through your own closet critically to creating polished dream looks. And each of the women he helps in the book ends up with their own distinct style that you can tell really matches them.

I'm not so crazy about all the "A to Z" guides, because they basically just list fashion elements and describe them, rather than helping you pick and choose for yourself. Not everyone can walk around in a classic white shirt, trench coat, scarf, stilettos, and so on, and not look boring or just plain bad. So in my opinion if you already know what dolman and peplum and poplin all mean and are looking for a little more guidance, these guides aren't for you.

Are they any style guides you like or use? It's always great to find a new one that really works.

I recommend checking out FashionAir, a new style website, which differentiates itself with a lot of video content -- yesterday I watched a style profile with Julia Restoin Roitfeld, and a couple of great "7 days of style" videos. One of my favorite features is how products mentioned in the videos (or similar styles) pop up to the side for easy linking of things you like. It's still in Beta, so it can be a little confusing to navigate, but if you head over and sign up your email, they'll send you a password.

One of my absolute favorite parts of the week is Sunday morning, curling up with a huge cup of tea and the New York Times' Style section. This week they featured Giovanna Battaglia, editor of Vogue's Italian jewelry and accessories editions -- and frequent favorite subject of street style photographers like The Sartorialist and Garance Dore. Here is the little interview they did with her about her style:

"WHAT I’M WEARING NOW My skirt is Dolce & Gabbana. My shirt, I designed. I had it done at a shirtmaker in Milan. It’s very Milanese to do this, and put your initials on it. Now I’m starting to have them made at Charvet in Paris. The shoes are Tabitha Simmons. The necklace is De Simone — it’s an old family from Naples — and the watch is a Patek Philippe Calatrava. It has my name on it. I’m quite obsessed with putting my name everywhere.

STYLE CREDO I’m classic. I’m not a rock ’n’ roll chick. And I like to mix old and new. I’ll never wear a full look from a fashion show. It has to be personalized. Accessories have always been a big thing for me. I have 352 pairs of shoes. I’m not kidding. I have a wall filled with them, and then another for handbags. I never throw anything away.

FAVORITE RECENT PURCHASES Three bathing suits from Norma Kamali — the ’50s “Dolce Vita” style. I got it in black-and-white, red and white. I photograph them all the time, but I never owned one.

FALL TRENDS I LIKE The ladylike, sexy Parisian woman. Like the Balenciaga look. I’m more into sensual, simple clothes now. Lots of silk and cashmere — stuff that makes you feel good. I love fashion and fun, but at the end of the day, the dress has to please you and your boyfriend.

FALL TRENDS I DON’T LIKE Crazy ’80s style. I shouldn’t say that because it’s a big trend, but who’s going to wear a shoulder like that? It’s fine for a picture, but I don’t like when a woman dresses too much like a fashion show. She looks like a clown, I think.

ON MY WISH LIST A Lanvin stole and a leather Alaïa skirt. Alaïa dresses are the best investment. You buy a sexy Alaïa dress, and you’re sure you won’t be alone."

I have to say, I completely agree on the 80s style trend and especially the Balmain shoulder craze.

The special thing about female designers of women's wear is that they can design for themselves, and be their own best advertising. And while most wear the tamest of their own creations (Carolina Herrera, Miuccia Prada, Consuela Castiglioni of Marni...) I really admire how out there Stella McCartney went with this jumpsuit at the 2009 Met Ball. It certainly took a lot of moxie and belief in her own work. (Kate, Liv, and Kate are also all in Stella McCartney)

Everyone has many facets to their personal style and taste... and these two photos (from Garance Dore) perfectly encapsulate one facet of mine. I guess it might seem sort of unexpected, since I just posted about Kate Spade, a totally different aesthetic and mindset.

But I love the mix of black and cream colors visually. And I love a black skull t-shirt in a closet next to Chanel. How it's all pristine but not OCD-organized. And a little black feather fascinator -- so British, so fun, so elegant and whimsical at the same time.

It's always too soon, to me, to start printing fall ads and fashion, but this latest Longchamp ad with Kate Moss is my favorite by far. The intensity of the colors and contrasts when it's on a two-page spread made me stop long enough to notice that Longchamp does ready-to-wear, something I'll admit I had no idea of before. And the clothes are gorgeous at that. So I guess that could be considered a successful ad!

What really says "modern" to me right now are new interpretations of a classic androgynous outfit: a blouse and pants. Recently I've seen a lot of these looks by Loewe,

which is not often a designer you hear from celebrities in response to "who are you wearing" -- but maybe all that will change. Sienna Miller wore a gorgeous sheer blouse with contrast piping at the seams in London for her new movie GI Joe, and Victoria Beckham had great loose white pants with a v-shaped high waist. They are looks that could step from a yacht to the city street, to cocktails or even to the office. Versatility and sophistication all in one.

Several weeks ago, Veuve Clicquot hosted the Polo Classic on Governor's Island in NY... the match featuring Prince Harry and Nacho Figueras. And of course a lot of excellent polo match fashion -- light draped dresses in neutral shades and big flouncy hats. Irresistible looks for beating the summer heat.

Standing out among the crowd -- Chloe Sevigny in what has become her staple Chloe scallop-hemmed short suit, Alek Wek looking amazing as always even with a broken wrist, Kate Hudson with new brunette hair, and model Hilary Rhoda in classic Grecian white.

Two opposites, really. I love the somberness, the simplicity, and yet the elegance of the black Lacroix - especially appropriate at this time. The mix of textures, and the silk turban, really work together amazingly. And the white Givenchy, is light and strong at the same time. I love the subtle white-on-white houndstooth, and the jewelry and accessories, which remind me of both the Statue of Liberty and The Little Mermaid.... yet are altogether modern.

Phillip Lim is not a designer whose collections I really follow; he's not first on my list of whose shows to look at. There are a bunch of young American designers with sort of similar aesthetics, and somehow he always falls into the fold with me. But then, every once in a while, I see a few of his pieces which blow me away. And I wish they were all like that. Here are some favorites, from his Resort '10 collection.

I'm obsessed with the hippie-ish proportions of these first two looks; maybe it's the 60s girl in me, and the way they perfectly blend hippie and mod styles together.

These are two of my favorite short cocktail dresses recently; I loved Anne at the Costume Gala because she wasn't afraid to do her hair and makeup to look totally different from her usual look, and the Jill Stuart dress, with it's mix of loosely draped lace and satin shine, is such a unique and special dress. Classic and micro short at the same time.

Now if it ever stops raining here in NY, I hope to see Anne's performance in Shakespeare in the Park!

pucci - beyond the cliche

Pucci has a new designer, and I love that they're taking the brand beyond the bring patterns they're known for -- it was a really nice surprise when I started looking through the Fall 09 shows.
I love the above pattern, which is a lot more subtle than the stereotypical Pucci, and in colors that you could wear in fall or in spring really. The white one-shouldered dress reminds me at the same time somehow of Chloe under Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, which would never be a bad combination I don't think. Tougher leather separates, and more classic draped dresses, helped round out the collection with a little something for any occasion.
I can't wait to keep watching what's new at Pucci each season.

And dear lord don't get me started on the boots....

THE icon, you might say. I like collections where you can see what the inspiration was, and there's no clearer way than screen-printing a face onto the dresses and skirts. That's what I love about the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 09 show.

I'm also all about: the gold brocade, shiny black floral sleeves, tiny colorful squares like fishscales, big flat black bows at the hip, slim classic black tailoring like Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn, and supersexy black lace.

Recently a lot of my fashion inspiration has been taking the form of figuring out interesting color combinations... some of my favorites that I wear a lot are aqua/turquoise with red, khaki with red, aqua with bright yellow, and brown and teal. For me it's the best way to mix basics and still keep things a little interesting. I also love the idea of cream with navy and black & white, dark green and brown, and so many other things I get inspired by on these street style blogs.

What a fantastic 2009 show, no? I thought it was much more fun than in recent years with Hugh Jackman hosting, with musical numbers, and I loved the way they presented the acting awards, with 5 winners of the past speaking warmly about each nominee. And it was actually funny! Ben Stiller as Joaquin Phoenix (or someone from a "hassidic meth lab" as Natalie Portman put it) and Tina Fey with Steve Martin come immediately to mind.

To me the top two dresses were Penelope Cruz (winner for Best Supporting Actress!) in a 60-yr-old vintage Balmain dress with amazing lace and ruching all the way down (as Tim Gunn said on the red carpet, it's a dress for winning in, and it proved to be her lucky charm I guess -- much like Julia Roberts's fabulous unforgettable vintage Valentino years back), and Natalie Portman in this ethereal orchid-colored dress by Rodarte. It looks like the very first buds you see on trees in the first days of spring, and the fabric is so light and airy.

I love the mix of structure and loose draping in this red dress on Amy Adams, and she found a shade of red that absolutely complements her hair color without being too much (not easy for a redhead, I'm sure). Anne Hathaway looked perfect on the red carpet in Armani with beautiful silver sequins on the bias that seem to swirl around her, and then look almost like a pixelated photo at the bottom. Onstage in the opening sequence she joined Hugh Jackman in something a little easier to move around and be swept off her feet (literally) in -- but equally dream-like.

I loved the black tulle-heavy ballgown that Marion Cotillard wore, which is just unusual enough to be special and daring, but not too prom-like. I wasn't crazy about Kate Winslet's dress, or her hair for that matter, but it fits in with the other black and navy dresses she's been wearing to shows this season -- understated, elegant, and regal -- and I can understand why she'd choose that Grace Kelly look for what has been a very big moment for her.

For many of the other dresses, it was once again the proliferation of a ton of white/cream/silver sparkly gowns, like we've seen all season. I guess it's this season's "safe" choice. Marisa Tomei's pleated Versace gown stands out though, as well as the intricate beading on Jennifer Aniston's simple dress (she always looks fantastic though because she looks really happy to be there -- not to mention nowhere near 40...). I didn't like Jessica Biel's white Prada, but I guess I can respect when image- and body-conscious actresses purposely go with something not body-flattering at all. I think my main problem with the dress is the bottom -- even on a column dress you need a little bit of flare to give it shape, and this just looks like when you take a pair of pants to a bad tailor to be tapered. Melissa George on the other hand elevated the safe dress to art in Dolce & Gabbanna -- the huge tulle flare at the bottom of her corsetted dress was flawless.

Best jewelry has to go to Angelina Jolie, who wore bright green earrings as well as a ring, which complimented an otherwise fairly simple black dress wonderfully, and to Amy Adams who topped off her beautiful dress is a surprising put fitting multi-colored gem necklace that looks like something out of ancient Egypt or Rome in its sheer size... I'd be surprised if her neck wasn't a little sore this morning from carrying all that around.

I must say again I'm loving what Miley Cyrus picked -- she must have a great stylist. It might be a little bit over-the-top princess-y, but she's young enough and big enough of a star to pull that off.

Normally I don't like fashion editorials -- which I realize is weird, but for the most part they're way too unrealistic. I don't really see the point if it's not something anybody would ever actually where. But I do like this one.
Maybe because I've been wearing a lot more color lately, drawn to patterns and the idea of mixing and matching in different ways. I also like the classic historical feel of the outfits -- but none of them are too outrageous.

baftas 2009

I always enjoy seeing pictures from the BAFTA awards, even though we can't watch the show over here, because of some of the quirky outfits that get chosen (see Kate Hudson last year in gold with a long braid in the side bar). Last night's show featured a lot of black, but didn't disappoint (then again I'm from NY, I'm used to it):

Penelope Cruz having a very Audrey moment (in Azzedine Alaia), Thandie Newton in black with gold stripes, and Sharon Stone in a classic red column dress that is actually pretty hard to get wrong.

Both Kate Winslet (in Zac Posen) and Angelina Jolie (in Giorgio Armani) wore sort of angularly shaped black dresses which I quite like, they both remind me of some of the best early dresses that Zac Posen did.

At the Sidaction Ball, in Paris.

Carla Bruni, flawless in YSL; but Dianne Kruger is absolutely stunning in this gown by Nina Ricci. Nevermind that Joshua Jackson's neckwear is reminiscent of a rodeo or something, these two are the perfect fashion couple. Just check out her shoes! How do they stay on, those straps are miniscule.

I have no idea what Mischa Barton's been up to since the OC but to me this dress makes up for any lack of style she may have exhibited since then. Normally I don't like floral appliqués, but both of these dresses manage it to an arty effect, not a prom effect.

Two more casual looks... Is that Ines de la Fressange?! Is that a woman over 50 baring her midriff and still looking stunning?! Yes, yes. Don't get me started on the shoes, which are like half matador-y and half cartoon bedroom slipper-y. I'll be off gluing big black pompoms to all my ballet flats, if you need me. xx

I really liked "The Devil Wears Prada" and a lot of the outfits in it, even the ones that were a bit outlandish and nobody would actually wear. So I was really trying to be excited about the upcoming "Confessions of a Shopaholic" movie with Isla Fisher, who I really enjoy as well. But from all the photos and trailers I've seen -- I just don't know. Is it just me, or are the outfits not all that fashionable, just throwing bright colors and brand names together, piling as much on as possible? Let me know what you think, fashionable ladies.

Everyone always talks about what great style the French and the Italians have, but to me it is Spanish people who really embrace fashion more than other cultures do.
Why? Well maybe I'm just biased, and I miss Spain (I used to live in Barça), but I love the way the Spanish will really take risks, go out on a limb with an unusual skirt, crazy accessories, a unique silhouette. They really go for a whole "look", and there's so much variety everywhere on the streets. French and Italian style tend to be more streamlined, but less quirky. I guess it's just a question of taste.
Right now they are having fashion expos in Barcelona known as "Bread&Butter"; here are some of my favorite of the street style photos taken there by Spanish blogs:

I believe that these images were leaked a little early -- the collection isn't in stores until March -- and while I wasn't overwhelmed, there are some cute pieces in the bunch. A few nice jersey dresses and jackets, vests, a cute black and white bikini and a boxy pink dress that would be a good beach coverup.

Michelle's one-shouldered white gown by Jason Wu for the inauguration balls.

During the day she wore a yellow dress and matching jacket (but must have been absolutely freezing out there!) designed by Isabel Toledo, which was quite unique. First lady fashion usually stays with blues, whites and reds, maybe a regal purple or demure pink, but only Michelle could pull off this shade. As Cathy Horyn of the NYTimes said, it really shows the adventurous spirit that she works in her life and her fashion.

Dr. Jill Biden was a bit outside the box as well, in a bright, short red coat and knee-high boots. Not the usual conservative political style at all! Apparently she always wears boots though and her daughter had them on as well. She clearly loves red as she had a gorgeous floor-length strapless red gown for the balls.

There was a very interesting article in today's NY Times about how Paris is responding to the recession, given how so many luxury brands are centered there. You can read it all here, and below are some key excerpts that I think everyone interested in fashion will be thinking about as we go forward.

“But there is also, paradoxically, an underlying satisfaction here that an era of sometimes vulgar high living is over and that a more bedrock French way of life will emerge.

Only in France is the recession lauded for posing a crisis in values.

A recent issue of Le Figaro Magazine featured a 12-page guide to scaled-down living in 2009, with predictions that people will work less and put family (even in-laws) first. A French trend expert quoted in the magazine dramatically described the changes as nothing less than “a revolution in values.” ”

“Rather than trying to keep the machine running by pumping out high-price hand bags, watches and other goods, he proposed the unthinkable: the entire luxury industry should slash prices. “We need a return to reason, decency, discretion, beauty and creativity — in other words, to true values,” ”

“ “This whole crisis is like a big spring housecleaning — both moral and physical,” Karl Lagerfeld, the designer for Chanel, said in an interview. “There is no creative evolution if you don’t have dramatic moments like this. So I don't know about you, but I just love awards season. I guess I feel about it the way some girls feel about weddings: I never really wanted to be an actress growing up, but I did want to give acceptance speeches. Is that weird?! Haha. I guess I just like how they're frivolous and emotional and still truly a fantasy -- while most movies are more and more "realistic" and unglamorous. Loved the Golden Globes last night (especially happy for Colin Farrell, Kate Winslet and Vicky Cristina Barcelona for their wins), and here are my favorite dresses:

Favorite ladies in black:
Kate Winslet looked fantastic all around last night, and aptly so as it was finally her night to win -- twice no less. Her dress didn't look like very much on tv, but with natural light the subtle sheen of the fabric adds a lot, and I love the way it cascades naturally to the ground. Amy Adams chose exceptionally well with this black Oscar de la Renta with appliques, it has a great shape to it and is different from her usual style. Tina Fey and Anne Hathaway (in navy) weren't really risk-taking with their dresses, but each look polished and emphasized their best features. The only question I'm left with is why, out of these four, is the british actress the most tan?! It boggles the mind.

Two favorites in white:
Angelina Jolie has had much more laid-back style in recent years since having kids -- she doesn't go for the statement dresses and instead seems to want to look nice but stay under the radar. She has consistently made good choices though, and is developing a low-key style all her own. I love the casual proportions of this silver dress and how she doesn't worry about it necessarily flattering every part of her. Kate Beckinsale on the other hand, chose an amazing dress which shows off every one of her curves and creates some of its own in big ruffles at the neckline. A truly fun, beautiful dress.

For choosing brilliant colors:
I generally don't like Eva Longoria's style, but this dress was stunning when she first walked out to present her award. The color was better on tv, and the fabric was perfectly sculpted to her body as she moved. And January Jones's dress wasn't really groundbreaking but I think it was the best, most unique color of the night, and suit her perfectly well.

And other noticeable white dresses:
So yes, cream, white and beige dresses were quite overdone this year, and most of them just blended together and were forgettable. But I liked a few: Sandra Bullock's dress had a lot of movement in the tiered ruffles when she moved, and was a big step up from her usual looks. Elizabeth Banks's dress had great texture and I liked especially the cap sleeves which you don't often see on evening gowns. Demi Moore and (I can't believe I'm typing this) Miley Cyrus also looked great in cascading white dresses, Miley's by Marchesa with great gold details underneath the layers which showed when she walked.

Disaster:
In each case it's a matter of both poor dress and hair choices, so even if you ignore one, you can't escape the other...

The people's choice awards are only really exciting because they're the first awards show of the season (the Golden Globes being this Sunday) but there were a few nice fashion moments this year. Kate Hudson showed up late (due to traffic, but I think really because it was her son's birthday) and missed presenting but won for favorite leading lady and got to show off her gorgeous blue assymetrical dress anyway. A lot of ladies wore black, and I especially liked Reese in a tiered halter dress which had really nice clean lines at the neck; Katherine Heigl in a trim, well-tailored black suit and a cute up-do; and Christina Appelgate in a long black gown with silver beading.

Among the men, I thought Seal was best-dressed (Thanks, Heidi) -- he got creative with black-on-black layering and a tie with a white pattern, but didn't go over the top. The Mentalist co-star Robin Tunney wore a patterened blue and white dress which might have been a little casual for the occasion, but I loved it all the same. Debra Messing and Marisa Tomei both wore short dresses with nude-colored shoes -- M in slinky red and D in an architectural pewter poof.

I have always loved this photoshoot with Keira Knightley from Vogue, from the practical and wearable modern pieces to the more costumey dreamy dresses; from the khaki and neutral colors to the contrast of preppy blue and ethnic red; and of course all the amazing scenery and personality.

These are fairly old photos of Anne front row at a show a few seasons ago, but I keep coming back to them because I think this light-colored by heavily-embellished minidress is such a great look for winter. A warm blazer or cardigan can be layered on top to cover up a little more without losing style. Of course, looking like Anne Hathaway does would help also.

I really liked these pictures I saw recently of Keri Russel's personal style -- a lot of simple pieces layered with different colors and patterns complementing eachother. She described it as menswear-influenced, but with feminine details.

I love Kate Hudson and her style in general, but I especially liked this photo shoot of her in January's InStyle magazine. I love the mix of black lacy lingerie with "comfort wear" -- rough knits and cotton jersey. To me it's a great way to layer in the winter and keep warm, without feeling like your outfits are completely boring and unsexy.

Three of my favorite looks from events this week are Penelope Cruz (with co-star from Vicky Cristina Barcelona --a must see film!-- Rebecca Hall), Rosario Dawson in Bottega Venetta at a 7 Pounds premiere, and Coco Rochas in Chanel.

Coco's look reminded me of another Chanel spokesmodel who always looks fantastic in their dresses as well as more andogynous looks (white shirts with black ties), and these pictures that I saw a few weeks ago.

Today for the first time I saw this new Dior ad with Marion Cotillard, and I love it. Beautiful view, beautiful composition, everything. I especially like the "natural" look they gave her, since I'm only really used to seeing her all glammed up at the Oscars, or deep (in makeup) in character.

The best way that I've found to "get to know" her though was in the Oscars Roundtable discussion from last year that I just saw recently. It has all the nominated actors talking about their lives and their work, and seeing them all interacting together you can really get a sense of their personalities more than in interviews. I really like the re-design of style.com; it makes everything look so enticing whereas before it was hard to find things and generally a bit dull. Anyway I was looking at a new section on the NY Scene, and found some great photos from a Rufus Wainwright concert in the Hamptons this past week.
I really loved Amanda Hearst's bright Klein-blue flouncy dress, as well as her simple and clean hair and makeup -- a perfect Hamptons look.

Then of course was the incomparable Daphne Guiness, who isn't very well known here yet, but hopefully will be seen a lot more in the near future. This outfit breaks all the rules of age-appropriate dressing, and yet instead of looking off she looks absolutely ageless. Quite an inspiration, no?

I loved the bold black-and white print of this dress, the practicality of her flats, and her cute short hairdo and red lipstick which add to the quirky feel of her whole look.

Finally, this last was a very simple outfit, but brightly vibrant, and the clever accessories and details make it something special. An easy way to transition from the beach to an event.

I've been noticing recently that almost everything I buy these days is white -- which I guess I should stop since summer is just about over! But on Monday's episode of Gossip Girl, white had its last hurrah at the famous White Party in the Hamptons, and both Blair and Serena had pretty stunning dresses that I thought were worth posting. Blair's short tiered dress was very form-fitting and appropriately young-looking, and Serena's grecian draped dress was much more dramatic, but looked perfect on her character, especially with long sparkly chains that wove through her hair and then dangled down her neck.

In recent months, when she's been seen around Sienna Miller has been in much more casual, everyday looks than she used to have -- probably trying to stay low profile and avoid more gossip in the tabloids. But I think there's a definite chicness in this simplicity, and it shows how you can be completely casual but still look nice. Most of her outfits have been mainly neutral colors, with nice tops and jeans, and small details to hint at her more obviously boho/60s past -- a printed peasant-y blouse, black stockings with a minidress, beat-up leather bags and belts, and the combination of white and off-white above, which I love.

What I really liked about this fall editorial from Vogue Paris was how it still did "total looks" from the designers, but alternated styling them in a typically editorial way, and in a street style way. It seems obvious, but it really brings a lot more life to the clothes, I think. For example I loved the fall collection from Alexander McQueen, with it's over the top frilly royal theme, but couldn't ever imagine it applied in practical terms. Below, Vogue put an embroidered royal vest over a simple blouse and jeans, and the clothes still make a statement but are thoroughly wearable. That's the kind of styling that I love the best.
